Who was AJ Winchester?  You may have seen the set of three iconic 1918 photographs showing a funeral procession of cadet sailors pulling a carriage with a flag draped coffin heading up York Street on route to the Pioneer Cemetery.  When Chief Petty Officer Alfred John Winchester died in Albany in 1918, he seemingly vanished from the family’s collective memory.  He lay unvisited and forgotten in an unmarked grave in Albany’s Memorial Park Cemetery for nearly 100 years.

The event will be held at 5.30pm at the Albany Sub-branch of the RSL clubrooms on Stirling Terrace. A graveside commemorative service will be held at 3pm at the Albany’s pioneer cemetery on Middleton Road and members of the public are most welcome to attend.
