Writing Workshops with VAC Writer in Residence Mary Anne Butler - The Bones of Story

Past Event

Stories are about a character who wants something badly, and has trouble getting it. The Bones of Story explores how to generate a strong and active central protagonist who propels the narrative forward through craft tools such as:

  • Clarifying your protagonist's goals
  • Refining the forces of antagonism
  • Raising the character stakes
  • Defining character change, and plotting character arcs
  • Defining the central, unanswerable question to your story
  • Generating a greater understanding of the difference between plot and structure
  • Using backstory and foreshadowing as narrative tools

These tools can be applied across a range of genres including fiction, memoir, stage plays, narrative poetry, auto-fiction and auto/biography.
